JustScribe Terms and Conditions

Updated

By downloading, installing or using JustScribe, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use JustScribe.

Overview

These terms govern your use of JustScribe (“the App”), a macOS dictation application developed by Quassum MB, Algirdo 18-11, LT-03218 Vilnius, Lithuania (“Quassum”, “we”, “us”). JustScribe transcribes speech on your device using machine learning models.

Licence

JustScribe is free software. Its source code is published at github.com/bring-shrubbery/justscribe and licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 (“GPL-3.0”).

The GPL-3.0 gives you the right to use, study, modify and redistribute the App under its conditions; in particular, if you distribute a modified version, you must release it under the same licence. Nothing in these terms limits the rights the GPL-3.0 gives you. Where these terms and the GPL-3.0 conflict about the software itself, the GPL-3.0 controls.

The name “JustScribe”, its icon and its branding identify our builds of the App. The GPL-3.0 does not grant a licence to them. If you distribute a modified version, give it a different name and icon so that people can tell it apart from ours.

Your content

Everything you dictate and every transcription produced by JustScribe is yours. Because all processing happens on your device:

On-device processing

JustScribe runs on your device. It does not need an internet connection to transcribe once a model is downloaded, and we do not operate servers that process your audio or text. The privacy policy describes the few cases in which the App uses the network.

Third-party models and components

JustScribe uses open models (including Parakeet, Whisper and, optionally, Llama) and open-source components. They run on your device and remain subject to their own licences, which may differ from the GPL-3.0. Models are downloaded from third parties, whose own terms apply to those downloads.

System permissions

JustScribe needs these macOS permissions to work:

You can revoke them at any time in System Settings; the App will then not be able to dictate.

Updates

JustScribe can update itself. Updates may fix problems, add features or change how existing features work. We are not obliged to provide updates. You can turn automatic updates off in Settings.

No warranty

JustScribe is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, as set out in sections 15 and 16 of the GPL-3.0. In particular we do not warrant that:

Transcription accuracy depends on audio quality, language, accent and other factors. Do not rely on JustScribe alone for critical, legal or medical text without checking it.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Quassum is not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages arising from your use of JustScribe. JustScribe is provided free of charge; to the extent liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the minimum the law allows. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded by law.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms. We will publish the new version on this page and update the date at the top. Continuing to use JustScribe after a change means you accept the changed terms. Changes do not take away rights you already have under the GPL-3.0 for versions you have received.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Lithuania, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live.
